NBGNO LaceUp365 Recap

Hello my frieeeeenndss! As most of you know by now, I recently emceed last week's New Balance Girls' Night Out (NBGNO). To get a refresher on how it came about read THIS. New Balance developed NBGNO with the goal of empowering women through physical and social experiences and opportunities, to connect with others. Last week's theme was LACEUP365. I've talked about how passionate I am for the #LaceUp365 program for close to a year now (HERE, HERE, AND HERE). Essentially, it represents New Balance's 25 year partnership with Susan G. Komen and was developed to bring awareness to breast cancer 365 days a year, not just in October. The ultimate goal being: a world without breast cancer. So, the next time you lace up for a workout and decide to take a selfie or a scenic photo - think about someone who has been diagnosed and give that little instagram pic a special hashtag #LACEUP365.

For those of you that have been touched by breast cancer by either experiencing it personally or someone you are close to, you understand why there is so much pink, so many organizations, and so many ribbons. And that understanding is this... guys, there is no cure. Doctors have made HUGE strides and have come so incredibly far, but, they still need more funding. Since Stacy's diagnosis, I've learned that breast cancer is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY complex. I never, ever ever realized the complexity of BRCA and HER2, and FISH test and Progesterone positive or negative and Estrogen positive or negative. Gah! You catch my drift? Every diagnosis gets a different treatment.

So, New Balance  dedicated last week's NBGNO to #LaceUp365. We chatted, we ran a few miles, we ate apps, had pink cosmos, dedicated our runs to BC survivors and honorees, and then I emceed a bit more and then the BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT DR. BRASTIANOS shared her story.

Through the Common.

The sun setting over the Charles. Swoon.

Back at the store, it was my turn to chat with everyone again and tell my experience over the past year with #LaceUp365. At first I was super nervous, but, Renee (at New Balance) told me to just "have a conversation" with the girls, which totally relaxed me. It is Girls' Night Out, after all!

Dr. Priscilla Brastianos is a person on a mission with a deeply personal passion for finding a cure for breast cancer. A Komen research grantee, and Director of the Brain Metastasis Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Brastianos is an incredible leader. She spoke at the Komen race 3 weeks ago which was when I first heard her story. Her grandmother diagnosed herself with breast cancer when she was in medical school at the age of 23 and then sadly passed at age 29. Her mother just passed of bc this year at age 57. I can't really explain to you how incredible this woman is... she's such an inspiration.

If there's one thing that I want you all to take from her speech at the event, it's this:

EXERCISE REDUCES YOUR RISK FOR BREAST CANCER BY 20%.

She provided a lot of excellent information, but, this fact stood out to me big time and I actually didn't catch it at the race and I admittedly didn't know the percentage was that high. This is a big deal, it's proven. So, if you could all do yourselves a favor, if you're not already exercising, please start somewhere. I'm talking about more than walking. Get your heart rate up at least 3x per week. Lift, dance in the living room, join an exercise class, run, do push ups and squats, hit a heavy bag, jump rope, climb stairs, do jumping jacks, play spike ball, WHATEVER. Just please start exercising. That is one big huge number that really means something! If you need ideas for getting your heart rate up, message me and I'll guide you. I promise.

This dedication wall shouldn't have so many names. Let's make a cure happen!

I've been keeping this secret for WEEKS! #NBGNO

Alright so... I have some prettttty fun and exciting news to share. As many of you know, I have been supporting the partnership between New Balance and Komen MA for about a year now with their #LaceUp365 program. This is a program that I am extremely passionate about as it generates awareness of breast cancer 365 days a year, not just in October. To refresh your memory... here are some links from the past:

first...

I went to Barry's Bootcamp to support kicking cancer's stupid butt!

then...

I pedaled to put an end to cancer at The Handle Bar

then...

We moved in unison for those fighting the battle at North End Yoga

then...

Only weeks later, my sister was diagnosed.

Like a ton of bricks, ugh. And, as I sit here writing this, I'll be honest...  I have knots in my stomach thinking about this sequence of events. It infuriates me that this disease is so prevalent.  That being said, I'm so grateful that major organizations have partnered together to continue to raise awareness and educate people on breast cancer. The #LaceUp365 program is all about awareness. My translation of "awareness" means:  be aware that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed, so... be aware of your body, be aware of your health, be aware of your environment, and be aware of what you can do to help lower your risk.

So, here's my secret REVEALED: A few weeks ago... I was contacted to be the blogger host at the next New Balance Girls Night Out Event (#NBGNO) on October 8th! To say I am honored -- is an understatement. These NBGNO events were developed by New Balance to deepen their relationship with women by empowering them, through physical and social experiences and opportunities, to connect with others. I've been chosen for this particular event because of my 'enthusiasm for fitness and passion and dedication to breast cancer awareness and the #LaceUp365 program.' Read a little more below. The best part - it's FREE and SO FREAKING FUN! Rebecca, Kim, and I participated in one last month. Recap here.

I'll be leading the pink laces run around Back Bay and then will speak a little bit about my passion for raising breast cancer awareness, as well as the HEALTH of our bodies.

First NBGNO I went to last month with the girls!

NBGNO (New Balance Girls Night Out)

I've always thought it would be a good idea to try to make more girls' nights active rather than a wine/food fest. (not that I have any problem with my wine/food fests). But, you know, it would be smart to do things like spin or box and THEN get a bev! Anyway, last night was exactly that!

New Balance has been throwing these Girls Night Out bashes a few times this summer.  Last night, I went to my first one and brought Kim and Rebecca along with me.

The goal of these events is to get active, social women together to achieve their fitness goals and have a lot of fun together. Last night's theme was "Self Expression". Fellow fitness blogger Rachel from "Healthy Chicks" lead the event and talked about what "Self Expression" in fitness means to her. She talked through how much her workouts have changed since college (hours on the elliptical then vs. diverse training now) and I have a feeling that a lot of the women in the room could relate. Working out to just burn calories and be skinny is not the best form of self-expression. Working out to be HEALTHY and FIT, is a much better way to express yourself with fitness.

I think a lot of women struggle with this in their early 20's and even later in life.  Do you feel like you are truly expressing your truest self with how you currently take care of yourself? Something that I learned in my 20's is that the more I focused on HEALTH as the goal of my fitness, the happier and more confident I became with myself. When you stop focusing on being 'skinny' and start paying attention to how your body feels when you lift a weight, strike a (yoga) pose, finish a race, hit a punching bag... you'll realize that feeling strong and confident outweighs all that heavy-on-the-mind 'skinny' stuff. And guess what? All of a sudden you'll start to look the way you feel. Honest!

Moving on... I love these events because I get to catch up with the local bloggers that I respect and follow! Athena from Fitness and Feta, is pictured to the left of me - we have matching New Balance 'anue collection' shirts on. Her blog is really great - I highly reccomend it! As Kim said "oh two things I love - workouts and cheese" lol

After we all caught up for a bit - we headed to our workouts. Kim, Becca and I headed over to the Equinox Roof Deck for a METCON3 class, Athena did FlyWheel outside, and Rachel did the fun run.

When we got to Equinox, I saw this cool obstacle course and I was JONESIN'  to play on it. Instead, we did the class and it was great!! (I still wanted to hit the monkey bars though - next time)

After we all broke a serious sweat, it was time to mingle, have BLT sliders, veggie wraps, and vodka sodas sponsored by Deep Eddy vodka (mmm).

Kim got a little cozy with the mannequin (watch out, Bill)

We left with little swag bags (on kim's left arm) filled with little goodies and of course, smiling faces!

The next event will be in September. Download the GNO app to stay informed and join us in the fun!

Question time: HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF IN HEALTH & FITNESS? Let me know in the comments below.

Happy Thursday (the start of the best part of the week!) xo
